The cultivation area of ​​the "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" is the plateau of Castelluccio for a total area of ​​about 20 sq. Km, falling for the part of Pian Grande and Pian piccolo in the municipality of Norcia and for the part of Pian Perduto in the municipality of Castel Santangelo su Nera (Macerata) with an average altitude of 1400 m. s.l.m. surrounded by the Porche, Argentella Vettore, Guaidone, Ventosola, Patino, Lieto mountains. The production area falls entirely within the Sibillini National Park.

Features

Characteristics: fairly small size, very varied color from one grain to another (brindle, yellowish, brownish), particularly fine skin, so it does not need to be soaked many hours before cooking, unlike other legumes.

Article 1
The Protected Geographical Indication "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" is reserved for lentils that meet the conditions and requirements established by this production specification.

Article 2
The denomination Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia is reserved for the set of local lentil ecotypes whose morphological characteristics are those of annual legumes with a height ranging from 20 to 40 cm., Erect or semi-erect bearing, glabrous stems and branches, small white flowers with celestial shades united in axillary inflorescences; the pods carry from one to three rounded and flattened seeds with a weight of 1000 seeds for about 23 g.

The cultivation area of ​​the "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia", as identified in the attached map, is the Castelluccio plateau for a total area of ​​about 20 sq. Km, falling for the part of Pian Grande and Pian piccolo in the municipality of Norcia and for the part of Pian Perduto in the municipality of Castel Santangelo su Nera (Macerata) with an average altitude of 1400 m. The production area falls entirely within the Sibillini National Park.
The Castelluccio plateau represents the bottom of the lake that dried up in the prehistoric era due to the manifestation of karst phenomena.
The shape of the valley accentuates some characteristics of the Valnerina climate with very harsh winters, with continuous snow from late November to mid-March and spring frosts that continue until the beginning of June, leaving very few weeks with a summer with thermal excesses also due at the altitude which increases the incidence of UV radiation

Article 4
The soil is of a clayey type, very rich in organic matter, with a high supply of phosphorus while the availability of potassium is low.
The cation exchange capacity is very high as a consequence of the high content of organic substance. The cultivation technique adopted is the traditional one, in use for many hundreds of years, plowing and harrowing in early spring, sowing from mid-March to mid-May, rolling of fields to facilitate germination.
The high frequency of rains and the early autumn colds shorten the lentil ripening period forcing farmers to mow and subsequent threshing by August. The pods are left to dry in the field and then threshed in the farmyard.
The maximum allowed unit production of "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" is set at 800 Kg / Ha.

Article 5
The existence of the technical conditions of suitability referred to in art.4 above is ascertained by the Umbria Region. The production land of the "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" will be included in a special register updated by the Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture competent for the territory. A copy of this register must be deposited with the Municipalities where the production area falls.

Article 6
The "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" is available for consumption with a variegated color ranging from mottled green to light brown, with the presence of tiger seeds.

Article 7
The "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" must be released for consumption in jute bags or in cardboard or plastic packages guaranteeing the inalterability of the healthiness and organoleptic characteristics of the product, weighing 0.250 kg, 0.500 kg, 1 kg.
On each container must be affixed a sealing cover such as to prevent the contents from being abstracted without breaking the seal.
On the containers themselves, the words "Lentil of Castelluccio di Norcia" and "Protected Geographical Indication" as well as the details to identify:
- name or business name and address or headquarters of the individual and / or associated producer and / or
of the packer;
- year of production;
- gross weight at the origin;
as well as any complementary and accessory indications which are not laudatory and are not suitable for misleading the consumer about the nature and characteristics of the product. The term "Made in Italy" must also be included for consignments intended for export
