Recognition of the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin of the wine
Barbera dAsti

Article 1
Denominations and wines
The denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin (d.o.c.g.), "Barbera d’Asti" is reserved for red wines that meet the conditions and requirements prescribed by this production specification, for the following types, additional specifications or mentions:
Red wines:
- "Barbera d’Asti";
- Upper "Barbera d’Asti"; also with the possible specification of the following sub-areas: "Nizza", "Tinella", "Colli Astiani" or "Astiano".
The sub-areas "Nizza", "Tinella", "Colli Astiani" or "Astiano" are regulated by attachments at the bottom of this specification. Except as expressly provided for in the aforementioned annexes, the rules set out in this production specification must be applied in all sub-areas.

Article 2
Ampelographic base
1. The wines to d.o.c.g. "Barbera d’Asti" must be obtained from grapes from vineyards having, within the company, the following ampelographic composition:
Barbera: minimum 85%;
Freisa, Grignolino and Dolcetto, alone or together: maximum 15%.

Article 3
Grape production area
The wine production area in d.o.c.g. "Barbera d'Asti" includes the territories of the following municipalities:
Province of Asti:
Agliano Terme, Albugnano, Antignano, Aramengo, Asti, Azzano d'Asti, Baldichieri, Belveglio, Berzano S. In the municipalities of Coniolo, Casale Monferrato, Occimiano and Mirabello Monferrato the production area is limited to the hilly areas located on the right of the Po river and which are delimited by the Casale ring road, exiting the bridge over the Po in the direction of Alessandria along the Colle S.Anna, crossing the Valentino district and the hamlet of S.Germano.
South of Casale the border of the production area coincides with the national road up to the administrative border of the municipality of S. Salvatore Monferrato, to include the land located west of the road.

Article 4
Rules for viticulture
1. The environmental and cultivation conditions of the vineyards destined for the production of “Barbera d'Asti” DOCG wines must be the traditional ones of the area and, in any case, suitable for giving the grapes and the wine derived the specific quality characteristics provided for by this specification.
2. In particular, the cultivation conditions of the vineyards must meet the requirements set out in the following points:
- soils: clayey, silty, sandy and calcareous soils, in their combinations;
- position: exclusively hilly. Bottom valley, wet and non-soils are excluded
sufficiently sunny;
- altitude: not higher than 650 meters above sea level;
- exposure: suitable to ensure suitable ripening of the grapes. Vineyard replanting is allowed
under current exposure conditions. North exposure is excluded for new plants;
- planting density: those generally used according to the peculiar characteristics of the grape and wine. THE
vineyards newly enrolled or replanted must be composed of a number of adectar stocks, calculated on the sixth of the plant, not less than 3,500;
- training systems and pruning systems: the traditional ones (training systems: the counter espalier, rising convection; pruning systems: the traditional Guyot, the low spurred cordon and / or other forms, however, which are not likely to negatively change the quality of the grapes);
- any forcing practice is prohibited.
3. The maximum yields of grapes per hectare of vineyard in specialized cultivation for the production of DOC wines "Barbera d’Asti" and the minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume of the relative grapes destined for winemaking must be respectively the following:
- Barbera d'Asti: Grape yield 9000 kg / ha; Alcoholic strength (min. Natural vol.) 11.5% vol
- Upper Barbera d'Asti: Grape yield 9000 kg / ha; Alcoholic strength (natural vol.) 12,0% vol
The maximum quantity of grapes allowed for the production of the wines referred to in Article 1 with the additional mention "vineyard" followed by the relative toponym must be 8,000 kg per hectare of specialized cultivation.
The grapes intended for the production of the wines referred to in art. 1 which intend to boast the additional specification "vineyard" must have a minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume of 12.50%.
In particular, in order to use the additional term "vineyard", the vineyard, less than seven years old, must have a further reduced hectare yield as indicated below:
• in the third year of planting:
- Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": yield of grapes 4,800 kg / ha; Title alc. (natural vol.) 12.5% ​​vol
- Upper Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": Grape yield 4,800 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
• in the fourth year of implantation:
- Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": Grape yield 5,600 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
- Barbera d'Asti Superiore "vineyard": Grape yield 5,600 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
• in the fifth year of planting:
- Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": Grape yield 6.400 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
- Barbera d'Asti Superiore "vineyard": Grape yield 6.400 Kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
• in the sixth year of implantation:
- Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": 7,200 kg / ha grape yield; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
- Upper Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": Grape yield 7,200 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
• from the seventh year onwards:
- Barbera d'Asti "vineyard": Grape yield 8,000 kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
- Barbera d'Asti Superiore "vineyard": Grape yield 8.000 Kg / ha; Title alc. natural) 12.5% ​​vol
In favorable years, the quantities of grapes obtained and to be destined for the production of DOCG "Barbera d'Asti" wines must be reported within the above limit provided that the overall production does not exceed the limit by 20%, without prejudice to the yield limit grapes / wine for the quantities in question.
4. In the event of an unfavorable vintage, if necessary, the Piedmont Region sets a yield lower than that provided for in this specification, also differentiated within the production area referred to in art. 3.
5. The interested drivers who expect to obtain a higher yield than that set by the Piedmont Region, but not higher than that set by the previous point 3, must promptly, and in any case at least 5 days before the starting date of their harvest, report, indicating this date, the estimate of the higher yield, by registered letter to the competent bodies for the area in charge of the control, to allow the appropriate checks by the same.
6. Within the maximum yield set in this article, the Piedmont Region, on the proposal of the Protection Consortium or the Interprofessional Council, may set maximum limits of grapes to be claimed per hectare lower than that provided for in this specification in relation to the need for achieve a better market balance.
In this case, the provisions of paragraph 5 do not apply.
7. The vineyards registered in the "Barbera del Monferrato" and "Barbera del Monferrato Superiore" registers cannot be part of the register of the "Barbera d’Asti" vineyards.

Article 5
Rules for winemaking
1. For wines to d.o.c.g. "Barbera d’Asti" the vinification and aging operations must be carried out within the production area referred to in art. 3.
However, taking into account traditional situations, these operations are allowed to be carried out within the entire territory of the Piedmont region.
2. The maximum yield of grapes in finished wine must not exceed:
- Barbera d’Asti: Yield (grapes / wine) not sup. at 70%; Max wine production (liters / ha) 6.300
- Barbera d'Asti Superiore: Yield (grapes / wine) not sup. at 70%; Max wine production (liters / ha) 6.300
For the use of the term "vineyard", without prejudice to the maximum percentage yield of grapes / wine referred to in the paragraph above, the maximum production of wine in l / ha obtainable is determined on the basis of the respective grape yields in Kg / ha referred to in 'art. 4 point 3.
If this yield exceeds the percentage indicated above, but not more than 75%, the surplus will not be entitled to the d.o.c.g. beyond this percentage limit, the right to d.o.c.g. for any product.
3. In winemaking and maturation, the most rational technical criteria must be followed and the oenological practices carried out to give the wine the best quality characteristics, including the enrichment of the sugar content, according to the methods recognized by law.
4. The following wines must undergo an aging period:
- Barbera d’Asti: Lasted 4 months of which, in wood (oak barrels of any size), (free); Starting from 1 November of the year of grape harvest;
- Barbera d’Asti vineyard: Durataminimo 4 months of which, in wood (oak barrels of any size), (free); Starting from 1 November of the year of grape harvest;
- Upper Barbera d'Asti: Lasted for 14 months, of which, in wood (oak barrels of any size), minimum 6 months; Starting from 1 November of the year of grape harvest;
- Barbera d’Asti upper vineyard: Lasted for 14 months, of which, in wood (oak barrels of any size), minimum 6 months; Starting from 1 November of the year of grape harvest;
Filling with the same wine stored in other containers is allowed, for no more than 10% of the total volume, during the entire compulsory aging.
5. For the grapes destined for the production of wines to D.O.C. "Barbera d’Asti", the harvest choice is allowed, where the legal conditions exist, only towards the denominations of origin "Monferrato" Rosso, "Piemonte" Barbera and "Monferrato" Chiaretto or Ciaret.
6. The wines destined for the d.o.c.g. "Barbera d'Asti" referred to in art. 1 can be reclassified with the denomination of controlled origin "Monferrato" Rosso and "Piemonte" Barbera, provided they correspond to the conditions and requirements provided for by the relative specification, subject to communication by the holder to the bodies competent.

Article 6
Characteristics of wines for consumption
1. The wines referred to in Article 1 when released for consumption must meet the following characteristics:
"Barbera d'Asti":
- color: ruby ​​red tending to garnet red with aging;
- smell: intense and characteristic, tending to ethereal with aging;
- flavor: dry, full-bodied, with adequate aging, more harmonious, pleasant, full-bodied;
- minimum total alcoholic strength by volume: 12.0% vol; with indication of "vineyard" 12.50% vol;
- minimum non-reducing extract: 24 g / l;
- minimum total acidity: 4.5 g / l.
Upper "Barbera d'Asti":
- color: ruby ​​red tending to garnet red with aging;
- smell: intense and characteristic, tending to ethereal with aging;
- flavor: dry, full-bodied, with adequate aging, more harmonious, pleasant, full-bodied;
- minimum total alcoholic strength by volume: 12.50% vol; with indication of "vineyard": 12.50% vol;
- minimum non-reducing extract: 25 g / l;
- minimum total acidity: 4.5 g / l.
2. It is the faculty of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies to modify the limits of total acidity and the minimum non-reducing extract with its own decree.

Article 7
Labeling, designation and presentation
1. In the designation and presentation of wines to d.o.c.g. "Barbera d'Asti" it is forbidden to add any qualification other than those provided for in this production specification, including the adjectives "extra", "fine", "natural", "chosen", "selected", "old" ", and similar.
2. "Barbera d'Asti" is allowed to use indications that refer to names or company names or private brands, provided they have no laudative meaning, do not mislead the consumer and are not confused with the "subzones".
3. In the designation and presentation of the wines to the "Barbera d’Asti" d.o.c.g., the designation of origin may be accompanied by the mention "vineyard" followed by the corresponding toponym provided that:
- the grapes come entirely from the same vineyard;
- this mention is entered in the "positive list" established by the body that holds the Register of vineyards of the denomination;
- the vinification of the grapes and the aging of the wines were carried out in separate containers and the mention "vineyard", followed by the toponym, was reported in the denunciation of the grapes, in the records and accompanying documents;
- the term "vineyard" followed by its toponym is shown on the label with characters of a size less than or equal to 50% of the font used for the d.o.c.g. "Barbera d'Asti".
4. In the designation and presentation of the wines referred to in Article 1, the indication of the year of production of the grapes is mandatory.

Article 8
packing
1. The bottles in which the wines referred to in Article 1 are packaged for marketing must be made of glass, of traditional shape and color, with a capacity permitted by current laws, but in any case not less than 18.7 cl and with the exclusion of the 200 cl container.
For promotional purposes only, the wines referred to in art. 1 can be packed in containers with a capacity of 600 cl, 900 cl and 1200 cl.
2. Packaging and presentation in bottles that can mislead the consumer or that are in any case such as to offend the prestige of the wine is prohibited.

NICE SUB-AREA
Art. 1 The denomination of controlled and guaranteed Barbera dAsti ”superior followed by the specification of the sub-area: Nizza, is reserved for wine that corresponds to the requirements established in this specification.
Art. 2 The wine to d.o.c.g. "Barbera dAsti" Superiore Nizza must be obtained from the Barbera grape in the minimum measure of 85% and the remainder from grapes of black grape varieties indicated in the Barbera dAsti specification.
Art 3 The wine production area in d.o.c.g. Upper Barbera dAsti Nizza includes the whole territory of the following Municipalities: Agliano Terme, Belveglio, Calamandrana, Castel Boglione, Castelnuovo Belbo, Castelnuovo Calcea, Castel Rocchero, Cortiglione, Incisa Scapaccino, Mombaruzzo, Mombercelli, Nizza Monferrato, Vaglio Serra, Vinchio, Bruno , Rocchetta Palafea, Moasca, San Marzano Oliveto.
Art. 4 The environmental and cultivation conditions of the vineyards destined for the production of the wine referred to in art. 1 must be the traditional ones of the production area.
For the purpose of enrollment in the register, the suitable vineyards are those located on sunny slopes or hilly hills and characterized by clayey marl - sandy and layered sandstone.
The position of the aforementioned land, to facilitate insolation, must be hilly with exposure from south to south west - south east.
The form of cultivation is the espalier with Guyot pruning with upright vegetation and with an average number of buds not exceeding 10 per vine.
Any forcing practice is prohibited.
The maximum yield of grapes allowed for the production of wine at d.o.c.g. "Barbera d’Asti" superior "Nizza" is 7 t equal to 49 hectoliters per hectare in specialized cultivation.
In favorable years, the quantities of grapes obtained and to be destined for the production of wines with a denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin "Barbera d'Asti" higher with the specification of the "Nice" sub-area, must be reported within the limits indicated above, provided that the production overall, it does not exceed the limits by 20%, without prejudice to the grape / wine yield limits for the quantities in question.
The harvest must be carried out using traditional techniques designed to safeguard the integrity of the bunches at the time of pressing.
Art. 5 The vinification and bottling operations must be carried out in the production area delimited by art. 3; taking into account traditional situations, it is allowed that these operations are carried out in the entire territory of the provinces of Cuneo - Asti - Alessandria.
- the increase of the alcoholic strength is allowed to the maximum extent of 1 alcoholic degree.
The grapes must ensure a minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume of not less than 12.5 vol%.
The maximum yield of grapes in wine must not exceed 70%. If it exceeds this limit but not 75%, the surplus will not be entitled to the denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin; more than 75% of the right to the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin for the entire product lapses.

On bottles or other containers containing the wine to d.o.c.g. "Barbera dAsti" Superiore Nizza "is mandatory to indicate the vintage year from which the wine derives.

TINELLA SUB-AREA
Art. 1 The denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin "Barbera dAsti" superior followed by the name of the sub-area "Tinella", is reserved for wine which corresponds to the requirements established in this specification.
Art. 2 wine to d.o.c.g. "Barbera dAsti" superior "Tinella" must be obtained from the Barbera vine in the minimum measure of 85% and the remaining 15% from grapes of black berried vines indicated in the disciplinary of Barbera d'Asti ".
Art. 3 The wine production area in d.o.c.g. "Barbera dAsti" superior "Tinella", includes the entire territory of the Municipalities of Costigliole dAsti, Calosso, Castagnole Lanze, Coazzolo, Isola dAsti (limited to the territory located to the right of the Asti-Montegrosso road).
Art. 4 The environmental conditions of cultivation of the vineyards intended for the production of the wine referred to in art. 1 must be the traditional ones of the production area.
For the purpose of enrolling in the register, suitable vineyards are those located on sunny slopes or hilly hills and characterized by clayey-sandy marl and stratified sandstone.

SUBZONE COLLI ASTIANI "or" ASTIANO "
Art. 1 The denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin "Barbera dAsti" superior with the specification of the subzone "Colli Astiani" or "Astiano" is reserved for wine that corresponds to the requirements established in this specification.
Art. "Barbera dAsti" superior "Colli Astiani" or "Astiano", must be obtained from the Barbera vine in the minimum measure of 90% and the remainder from grapes of black grape varieties indicated in the disciplinary of Barbera dAsti.
Art. 3 The wine production area in DOCG "Barbera dAsti" superior "Colli Astiani" or "Astiano" includes for the municipality of Asti the district Montemarzo and S. Marzanotto Valle Tanaro, for the municipality of Isola dAsti, the territory on the left of the Asti - Montegrosso dAsti road and the entire territory of the Municipalities of Mongardino, Vigliano, Montegrosso dAsti, Montaldo Scarampi, Rocca dArazzo, Azzano.
