A yard that lacks any color or design typically looks bland and doesn’t do much in the area of curb appeal. Adding a flower bed, small trees or yard decorations gives the entire exterior of the home personality and style. No matter what your landscaping budget is, there are plenty of things you can do to enhance curb appeal.

Step 1

Design the outer edge of the yard to accommodate a flower bed or planter. Keep the yard from looking too uniform by creating a scalloped edging around a curb, wall or driveway and adding in a variety of plants with different colors and heights. To increase height in the landscape, add a raised flower bed along one edge of the yard or near the foundation of the home.

Step 2

Plant ornamental grass along the property lines to add dimension to a flat yard and increase privacy if there is no wall. Separate the plantings from other landscape areas by filling the bed with decorative rocks or ground cover.

Step 3

Break up a large, flat backyard by installing a gravel or stone walkway from an exterior backdoor to a garden area in a corner or along the edge of the yard. Plant a variety of aromatic herbs or vegetables to create a small garden area in the landscape.

Step 4

Add height to a flat yard by using soil to create soft mounds throughout the planter beds. Cover the various mounds with ground cover and set large rocks around randomly to create a natural appearance. Near the home or curb, plant small ornamental trees that fit proportionally with the home and size of the yard.

Step 5

Install a concrete or stone patio in the center of a large yard, and then add plants and flowers around the patio to create a socializing area. On the patio, place a small fire pit and comfortable seating to use throughout the year.
