One of my many projects, this past Summer, that I tackled was to extend my poured cement patio with sixteen inch square cement pavers. This post shows the different steps I took to get my patio looking the way I envisioned. All the supplies I used to lay my cement pavers. I gave a lot to my neighbor and have a giant pile left to use for filling dips in the lawn and other holes on my property.

Can I Use Gravel As a Paver Base? (Beginner Tips)

Do you have clay based soils or silt based soils in your yard and are worried about the long term durability of your new paving stone patio or driveway. There is an easy solution to this challenge; install geotextile fabric or what is commonly known as filter fabric. Filter fabric is designed to separate the base material from the underlying soils. Southern California soils commonly are clay or silt based. Over time and especially during rains, the native soils could eventually mix with the compacted class II base material and eventually weaken the paving system.

The compacted base is really the beginning of the interlocking process of your installation. Once your base is wet down and compacted it creates the foundation for your pavers to be built on. Even the screed sand is varied in size so it also creates and interlocking effect. Standard demo removes the expansive soils, but over time with possibly rain storms or over watering of your yard, clay can migrate and mix with your base. Installing the geo-fabric will prevent this from happening and aid in the long term durability of your paving stone project.

The fabric is placed on top of the native soils and your base is then placed on top of the fabric, thus creating a barrier that allows water to shed and prevents the soil around it from working its way into the base. If you do not have clay based soils or silt then this will not be a challenge for you.

For a minimal investment filter fabric is a great addition to your project. This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Can You Lay Pavers Over Dirt?

My husband says it is critical that we install landscape fabric under pavers, whereas I am of the mindset that it is really not necessary. Can you shed some light on whether or not we should laying landscape fabric under our paver walkway bed, prior to placing down the pavers? Laying down landscape fabric under paver walkways may help to reduce some weed growth, however, do not expect it to eliminate the problem altogether. A few years back, I left a wheelbarrow in a poorly lit garage that contained sand and a few grains of grass seed. See my video on how to properly install a paver walkway. The point of this story is that weeds and grass can grow in almost any soil condition, and they will certainly still grow on top of a weed barrier over time. One of the chief reasons sand is used over stone dust in building a paver walkway is that it is porous and will allow for better water drainage. Good drainage is critical for having a long lasting paver walkway. Over time lawn clippings and other debris work their way down between the pavers to the sand diminishing the drainage capability of the paver bed.

As a part of our curb appeal update this summer, we planned on jacking up all of the old concrete and replacing it with new concrete. The contractors we contacted were all booked and expensive, so we started thinking of other ideas. Would it be possible to just cover it with new pavers instead? After lots of research, the answer was yes!

Building a landscape retaining wall

This FAQ considers whether a "membrane" is necessary beneath paving projects, and, if so, just what sort of geo-textiles should be used, and where they should be positioned? I was wondering if you could tell me if you recommend geotextile membranes between the sub base and sand course. Contractors who do not use the membrane say it can cause problems later and is not necessary but the ones who do, say it is beneficial. Some contractors are suggesting or even recommending that residential driveways and even patios should incorporate a "membrane" for best results. Unfortunately, quite a few of the contractors recommending the inclusion of a membrane seem to be unsure as to the benefit it brings to the finished pavement. Some claim it is a weed-proofing measure, while others claim it helps reduce the amount of sub-base required, and yet others claim it can eliminate the need for a sub-base completely.

Retaining walls have gained popularity in a short period of time and are commonly used in commercial and home landscaping projects. Proper installation of landscape retaining walls can make sloping lots usable while managing both soil and water runoff. In addition to serving a functional purpose, retaining walls also add aesthetic appeal to your landscaping. Use them in home gardens to highlight flower beds, patios, or yard features. While retaining walls are made out of many types of building materials, a block system is a popular choice due to the easy installation features. The blocks are made from cement and lightweight aggregate materials. There are various designed wall block systems. Shown is a traditional block.

Driveway fabric is an ideal material for building a driveway with a supportive base layer which will help to create a more stable surface which will resist ruts and potholes. Woven fabrics allow for the passage of water where non-woven fabrics are filters; both serve different purposes. Our fabric is a woven stabilization fabric with high high durability. These fabrics offer a critical function that allows water to pass through and not damage your driveway. Non-woven fabrics, are often suggested, by some companies, but are not a good choice. Non-woven fabrics serve as a filter product and are not good for stabilization.

Take pallets apart and sort by thickness and shapes. There may be waste when wall is completed. Decide on look of wall - ashlar pattern or random. Dig a trench 3" wider on each side than the widest stone. Depth varies depending on wall height. Fill trench with a minimum of 3"-4" of class V limestone base and compact with a hand tamper or a vibrating plate compacter you can typically rent these at a neighborhood equipment rental company.

Patios are a valuable asset to any home's property. Nothing can be better than enjoying the fresh air and a beautifully landscaped yard in the company of family and guests or simply finding quiet time to yourself with a book and a glass of wine. But you need a good, hardscaped place for all of this magic to happen. Dirt and grass are poor surfaces for chairs and tables.
