How to take care of a weed plant at home

For many of us who live in a city, the problem of ‘urban plant invasion’ is an everyday thing. There are so many signs and areas for their cultivation that make us so depressed and in despair. The so-called ‘weed plants’ affect us in many ways: by polluting the air we breathe, by creating too much noise in our small residential places, by shading the sun and making everything look grey. But what many of us don’t realise is that even some of the most harmful plants in nature, like weeds, actually have their uses.

Growing weed plants at home can be a good method of educating yourself about the specific characteristics of each type. They are suitable for use in an organic garden or greenhouse, and are definitely the most simple method of getting to know about the benefits of weed plants. It’s not a matter of being careless, but rather being aware of what you do. If you start to love these plants, you will understand what it is you are nurturing.

Weed plants have a high nitrogen content, are free-flowering and will self-seed when they are mature, so they can be considered to be quite productive. The garden world is full of ‘cool’, often ornamental plants that will die within a year and are growing as weeds. But a weed plant is a good biological farmer and the right plants will fertilise, weed and feed themselves.

You can raise a lot of good things for the pleasure of your family and for yourself, even without using any chemicals. Besides being the nutritional background for many mushrooms, it is easier to make it ‘sustainable’ without using any chemicals than to grow a lot of different types of plants. With weed plants, the garden becomes a real nursery, where you can pick and choose and experiment with different varieties for a long time before you think about selling them.

But that doesn’t mean that it’s all about science. Let’s look at some examples, to learn how you can love these plants.

Types of weed plants

Lamium amplexicaule, aster (astilbe)

Before we dive in, I will give you an example of a garden weed that should be avoided: Amplexicaulis microphyllus. This plant is in the family of mustard, and if you have ever eaten mustard it will probably be easy to understand why it is such a good plant to avoid. The plant has long narrow triangular shaped leaves and its shoot often gets curly in shape. But the most dangerous thing about this plant is that the leaves contain oil, which is toxic to rabbits.

All Asteraceae (the Aster family), which include mugwort, daisy, chrysanthemum and asters, are harmless. This is probably because the Aster family is not harmful to plants, but rather to insects, with the exception of the perennials, like Yarrow. Asteraceae has the ability to work as nitrogen carriers for a long time, and also for their high nitrogen content, the flowers stay open late in the summer. Most of the genera are bee-pollinated, but the Aster family is unique because of their constant emission of stalks.

Asteraceae grows very fast and has a strong root system, so when you start growing weed plants, you have to put in some early work before they get very large. Some plants, like dandelions, are not very large, and also a healthy slow growing plant, like mycorrhiza. But a great deal of weed plants can grow very quickly, and this plant should be avoided.

You will be able to see that some weed plants are easy to identify. The rest are more confusing, but remember that they have some of the characteristics of many plants that are harmless. For example, the ostrich fern is in the genus Chamaesyce, but it doesn’t have any chlorophyll and it is impossible to photograph, so it is very difficult to find any photographs of it online. So, this plant is not harmful to humans or animals, and is a good model for learning. If you want to grow a lot of different types of plants, be sure to avoid these types of weed plants.

But that is not so difficult if you know the most important characteristics of weed plants. Some are easy to identify, and some are more confusing.

But first, if you haven’t yet got your hands on some weed plants, why not try growing some in your own garden. It is important that you do this when you have enough time to tend them as they will have more time to grow, to get strong.

Water

The first important characteristic of weed plants is their ability to produce a large amount of water. After the first and the second flowering period, water should be applied two times a
