Origin, classification and history

Origin: Great Britain.
F.C.I classification: Group 6 - hounds

Otterhound (Chien de loutre) literally means "otter hunter", because as the name implies this dog was used precisely for this use. The breed, since this type of hunting was prohibited in England, was directed towards other types of game, to avoid its inevitable extinction. It is currently a multipurpose hound, used in general for large game, both moulting and individually. Today it is also used for civil protection tasks.

General aspect

The Otterhound is a large and strong hound, built to spend the whole day hunting in the water, but equally capable of long gallops on the mainland. His expression is intelligent. Its construction is strong, robust and solid. It is very well proportioned and of fair relationships. The main characteristic of typicality is given by the head and the mantle.

The character of this breed is gentle, friendly and not subject to mood swings. It can also be an excellent companion dog only if it is guaranteed the right physical exercise and above all some good swimming, given its particular interest in water and marshy areas. It is an excellent hunting dog. He always stands out in the hunt for big game and he turns out to be fearless and determined in the face of the prey.
