South-Palearctic-Maghrebian species widespread from China to Portugal and from France at least to Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. In peninsular Italy it is missing only in some high mountain sectors due to ecological causes. In addition to Sicily and Sardinia, it is present in Asinara, Egadi, Pantelleria and Lampedusa.

Distinctive characters
Head-body length: 3.5-5.2 cm
Tail length: 2.4-2.9 cm
Weight: 1.5-2.2 grams
The coat is gray-brown at the top with possible reddish shades, light gray at the bottom. The muzzle is pointed, fleshy, with a lower mouth opening. Short, wide ears, flesh-colored and clearly visible. Small, dark eyes. Short legs.
Biology
Especially nocturnal habits, lonely. Reduced activity in cold periods (partial lethargy).
Feeding: mostly insects, but also spiders and small molluscs.
Sexual maturity is reached in the year of birth (spring offspring) or in the following year (summer offspring). Gestation lasts 27-28 days; 2 to 5 parts per year, mostly in April-September, each with 2-6 small inept.
Verses: squeaks, hisses, squeaks.
It is the smallest European mammal; it arramic very easily; consume a ration of food equal to your body weight daily.
